Who these terms are between

Portia is operated by Verity Systems Limited, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 16884817), registered address 5th Floor, 167-169 Great Portland Street, London, W1W 5PF ("Portia", "we", "us"). These terms are an agreement between Verity Systems Limited and you, the person using the service ("you").

What Portia is, and what it is not

Portia is a document-organisation and case-structuring tool. It helps you organise your evidence, identify the legal foundations your case may rest on, and prepare structured documents.

Portia is not a law firm, and it is not a substitute for a solicitor or barrister. Using Portia does not create a solicitor-client relationship, and nothing Portia produces is legal advice. Portia does not tell you what to do, does not represent you, does not conduct litigation on your behalf, and does not guarantee any outcome.

You remain responsible for your own case. Every document you produce with Portia, and every decision about whether and how to use it, is yours. You are responsible for checking that anything you rely on or submit is accurate, complete, and appropriate for your situation. Where a matter is urgent, high in value, or legally complex, you should seek advice from a qualified solicitor or barrister.

Eligibility and your account

To use Portia you must be at least 18 years old and able to enter into a binding agreement. When accounts are available, you are responsible for keeping your login details secure and for activity that happens under your account. You agree to give accurate information when you register and to keep it up to date.

Acceptable use

You agree to use Portia only for lawful purposes and only for your own genuine legal matters. You must not:

• use Portia to do anything unlawful, or to pursue a claim you know to be false or fraudulent;
• upload documents or information you do not have the right to use;
• attempt to bypass, disable, or interfere with the way Portia works, including its safeguards and limits;
• use Portia to provide legal services to others, or resell or redistribute the service, without our written agreement;
• attempt to gain unauthorised access to the service, other users' data, or our systems.

We may suspend or end your access if you break these rules.

Your documents and content

The documents and information you upload remain yours. You keep all rights in them. To provide the service, you grant us a limited licence to store and process your documents solely to operate Portia for you, and for no other purpose. We do not claim ownership of your content, and we do not use it to train AI models.

How we handle your data, including who processes it, where it is stored, and how long we keep it, is set out in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of your agreement with us.

Our intellectual property

Portia, including the platform, its software, design, and the way it structures and presents information, belongs to Verity Systems Limited or its licensors. Using Portia gives you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the service under these terms. It does not give you any ownership of the platform or the right to copy, adapt, or resell it. The documents you produce for your own case are yours to use for that case.

Plans and payment

Portia is not yet open. When it launches, the plans and prices available are described on our pricing pages. If you take a paid plan, the payment terms that apply to it, including billing, renewal, and cancellation, will be set out when you subscribe. We will make the full billing terms available before paid plans go live.

Disclaimers and limitation of liability

Portia is provided on a reasonable-efforts basis. We do not warrant that its outputs are accurate, complete, or suitable for any particular legal purpose, and you must review and satisfy yourself about anything you rely on or submit. Portia depends in part on the documents and information you give it, and on third-party services, and we do not guarantee it will always be available or error-free.

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.

Subject to that, we are not liable for the outcome of any legal matter, for decisions you make in your case, or for any indirect or consequential loss. Any other liability we have to you in connection with the service is limited to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Ending your use

You can stop using Portia at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms, if we need to for legal or security reasons, or if we stop offering the service. If your access ends, the terms that by their nature should continue, including the sections on your content, our intellectual property, disclaimers, and liability, will continue to apply.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and any dispute about them is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

Changes to these terms, and contact

We may update these terms from time to time, for example as the service develops or before paid plans launch. When we make changes, we will update the "last updated" date at the top of this page, and where changes are significant we will take reasonable steps to let you know.
