There's a free way in, and it's built to stay that way.

Most people end up representing themselves because of cost. So Portia starts from free: a genuine tier, not a trial, with the tools to organise your case and work out where you stand. Paid plans are there if you need more, but the free tier is the point, not the bait.

The free tier

Free. One matter, the essentials, no card.

  • Upload your documents and have them organised into a clear picture of your case.
  • A chronology of what happened and when.
  • An indexed set of your exhibits.
  • A missing-evidence checklist, so you can see the gaps.
  • Key deadlines tracked.
  • One run of Cause Finder, to help you understand what your case may rest on.

That's enough to take a folder of documents and turn it into an organised case you can actually see, and to get a first sense of whether you have a claim. It covers one matter, and it's free because it's meant to be, funded by the businesses who use Portia too. It's also why organisations that help people through the legal system can point them here.

The paid plans

If the free tier isn't enough.

Some matters need more than the essentials. Two paid plans add depth as your case demands it. Each builds on everything in the tier below, so you never lose anything by moving up.

Plus

£49a month

For a single matter you're actively building.

It opens up Portia's fuller support: working through your case with it, help preparing your documents, and a record of your matter as it develops. Single matter, support by email.

Pro

£99a month

For a serious, high-stakes matter, or more than one.

It adds the deeper analytical tools for a demanding case, more capable case discussion, and room for multiple cases at once.

Portia is still in build, and some of what Plus and Pro will include is arriving in stages. You'll only ever pay for what's available to you, and everything a plan includes is added as it ships, never charged for before it's there.

Before any of this, it's worth knowing whether you qualify for legal aid, actual public funding for your case, which is a separate thing from Portia. If you might, that's worth checking first. Our legal aid page explains how to find out, and where Portia fits alongside it.

The honest caveats

A few things worth being straight about.

"One matter" means one dispute, one claim against one party; if you have a second, that's a second matter. There are no hidden charges and nothing is priced by the hour. And Portia isn't open to sign up for yet, so nothing below is live; these are the plans as they'll be, and the way to be first in is the waitlist.

The free tier is real, and it's where most people should start. When Portia opens, that's the door.
