Portia is built for people representing themselves. But representing yourself doesn't have to mean never getting help. Plenty of cases reach a point where a solicitor or barrister is the right call, whether because the matter grows, the stakes rise, or you simply decide you'd rather have someone alongside you. Portia is built so that moment is a clean handover, not a fresh start.
The handoff
Your case, ready to hand over.
The work Portia helps you do, organising your evidence, mapping the legal foundation, structuring your documents, is the same groundwork a professional would otherwise have to do from scratch, often at their hourly rate. So if you do bring someone in, you're not handing them a shoebox of papers. You're handing them a case that's already structured, evidenced, and set out the way the system expects. There's often far less heavy lifting left, which can mean less of their time to pay for.

We're building a way to connect you with solicitors and barristers when you reach the point of wanting one, so that handover is as simple as the rest of Portia. It isn't open yet, and when it is, it will always be your choice whether and when to take that step. We'll say more as it gets closer.

If you're an organisation that supports people facing legal problems, an advice service, a charity, a community body, Portia may be somewhere you can point people. The free tier exists partly for exactly this: a genuine, no-cost way for someone to organise their case and understand where they stand, built to a standard you can refer people to with confidence. Portia is not a law firm, and it does not provide legal advice. It helps you prepare your case; it doesn't represent you, and it isn't a substitute for a solicitor or barrister. If and when you bring in a professional, that relationship is between you and them. Portia's job is to make sure that, whenever that moment comes, your case is ready for it.
